Summer Hours begin May 11

May 11th, 2008

We will begin our transition to the summer schedule May 4th. Sunday, May 4th will be the last Sunday 9pm Mass.  Saturday, May 10th will be the last Saturday Evening Mass. Mass for Sunday, May 18th, will be at 10:30am.
Mass during the summer months will be Sundays, 10:30am only.

Our doors will remain open all summer during the day for those who need to study. For security reasons the building will be locked every night from 10pm to 8am, starting Sunday, May 11th. Our entire building will be equipped with air  conditioners. Be aware that we may be doing some facility maintenance from time to time and the noise level may get loud at times.

Beginning May 28th grille outs will be at 5:30pm following 5pm Mass. We provide the burgers, brats and hot dogs and you can bring the chips, salads and deserts.

A message from Fr. Joe

May 4th, 2008

Paul planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth. Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth. The one who plants and the one who waters are equal, and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor.
1Corinthians 3:6-8

As a child of the 1950’s, I would watch each week as the Mickey Mouse Club aired in glorious black and white. At the end of each show Annette Funicello and the rest of the gang would come soulfully onto the stage and begin the closing song:

The time has come to say, “Good-bye,” to all our company.

Well, gang, it is now MY time to say “Good-bye”. After eight of the most spirit-filled years in my life as a priest, I will be moving in early July to a new assignment. At this writing, I still don’t know where that will be, but I will carry the people of the St. Thomas More Newman Center with me for the rest of my life. What an incredible ride this has been. As I look back through our sacramental records I see what we have accomplished together as a community of faith: baptisms, weddings, RCIA, confirmations, confessions and even funerals, all to the glory of God. We have partnered with the university in so many ways that I can’t even begin to recount them. I have had the privilege of standing with our football squad at many home games on the sidelines, as well as cheering on many other athletes. Academically, I have been gifted with the friendship of some of the best and brightest people in our nation. In service to the poor and needy our service teams and Spring Break projects are second to none at any other campus ministry. Excellent staff (both professional and students) and hundreds of volunteers have made this an incredibly active ministry. By God’s grace I became integrally involved in the national executive board for campus ministry (CCMA) and the National Catholic Student Coalition (NCSC).

You have allowed me to cheer you on, to cry with you, play and laugh hard, pray devoutly and love you deeply. In return I hope I have contributed to your lives in some ways. I have built friendships here that will last a lifetime. I have stood at the beat-up old altar in our chapel more than 1,500 times in these eight years to pray with you and share the gift of Eucharist. This is the greatest privilege of my priesthood.

Now it is time for a different man to come as your spiritual father, a new priest to be sent by Bishop Swain as I am leaving. He is coming to water the seeds of faith I planted here and to plant seeds of his own. In time, he will also go and leave the unfinished work of this ministry to yet another priest. I know that in a few years no students will remember my being here except for the photo on the foyer wall. That is as it should be. This is a place of transitions. Please treat the new guy with the same love and affection I have felt from you for so long.

With the deepest gratitude,
Fr. Joe Forcelle
